The work of Lucy McRae

Lucy McRae is an Australian artist straddling the worlds of fashion, technology and the body. As a body Architect she invents and builds structures on the skin that re-shape the human silhouette. Her provocative and often grotesquely beautiful imagery suggests a new breed; a future human archetype existing in an alternate world.

Waterdrop shot in 10000 frames a second

This is interesting and cool. Find out what water droplets actually do when they hit a body of water.

Is the office the worst place to work...?

...especially for creative type people, who generally need longer periods of time that is uninterrupted? The article Why the office is the worst place to work looks at how a day in the office is broken, and offers some potential solutions to have longer periods of time to actually carry out your work.

SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT SANTA CLAUS CAN'T POSSIBLY EXIST

1 - No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and bacteria, this does not completely rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

2 - There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the original total. - 378 million according to the Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there is at least one good child in each.

3 - Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming that he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to find somewhere to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat the mince pie, drink the sherry, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household, a total trip of 75 1/2 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding etc. This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

4 - The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine reindeer. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for purposes of comparison, this is 4 times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth II (the ship, not the monarch).

5 - 353,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance. This will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. PER SECOND. EACH. In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 THOUSANDTHS of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

IN CONCLUSION - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he’s dead now. Sorry.

Snow in Sheffield, November 2010

Snowy Sheffield 2010, originally uploaded by Jon W. Howson.

Snow has come early to Sheffield, and the UK for that matter. Most people cannot remember a time in recent memory when the snow has been this bad. We had over a foot of snow fall in one night on Tuesday which virtually brought the city to a stand still. Only the brave/fool hardy were seen to be on the roads on Wednesday.

For more pictures of snow in and around my area please view my Snowy Sheffield Album on Flickr.

Stacie - The second person to take part in my Draped Fabrics project

Stacie - Draped Fabric_0005, originally uploaded by Jon W. Howson.

Information:
Photographer: JonWHowson (Model Mayhem #725023/Purestorm)
Models: staciefoster (Purestorm)
Makeup: staciefoster (Purestorm)
Stylist: staciefoster (Purestorm)

Location: Scunthrope

A big thanks to Stacie for being willing to pose for this series. It was a pleasure to be able to work with more experienced models who know how to pose and what looks good without having to give them micro directions.

The lighting for this series of images was similar to the first set with Amie, with a soft box 45 degrees to the right of the camera. This time however, there was no lights on the background, but there was an additional flash situated upon my camera modified with a foam reflector to soften the light. (Details of this foam reflector can be found on Chuck Gardener's website DIY Reflector-Diffuser).

To see the earlier post when working with Amie, see the post An experiment into Art Nude and Draped Fabrics.

Clicking on the image at the top will take you to the series of images shot with Stacie.

If you, or you know someone that might be interested in posing for this project, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Inspiration is for Amateurs...?

In the article Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work, it suggests that the best ideas come from being in the moment working and creating the images rather than sat about thinking about how to create an image. You also end up with a lot more work. What do you think?

For the masochists amongst us...

The Market has no taste...

The market has no taste by Seth Goldin

The link above reminded me that as an artist that we have to believe in ourselves and our products to achieve our own personal goals, ambitions and greatness. Else we would most likely settle into mediocrity and pandering to the general public. Then again, if you want to earn a living...

Outside of photography, I am a musician, and this is one of the rare occasions where one of the orchestras I perform with is actually recorded. Hope you enjoy.

An Experiment into Art Nude and Draped Fabrics

Draped Fabrics_0007, originally uploaded by Jon W. Howson.

Information:
Photographer: JonWHowson (Model Mayhem #725023/Purestorm)
Model: Amie Grace (Model Mayhem #1730904)
Location: Home studio, Sheffield
Stylist: Amie Grace

First things first, a big thank to Amie in accepting to work with me on this project. I can only imagine what it is like to be on the other side of the camera, but was glad of Amie's experience of both sides of the camera.

This is my first venture into the realms of Fine Art work, and was a learning experience for myself in how to work with a model in this environment. The route I decided to go down was to try and involved Amie in as much as the process as possible, through ways of dressing her with the fabric to giving regular feedback via reviewing the images on the back of the camera.

Keeping it to the level of Implied nudes I feel helped with the comfort levels of the model. If you browse through the implied nude photographs of Amie, you can see that we started out with Amie wearing a white tube dress before moving on to using the fabric to cover her modesty.

The lighting for these images was kept simple with a soft box 45 degrees to the right of the camera, and at times, two lights to give a white background.

This is definitely a project I would like to pursue with other willing models. If you, or you know someone that might be interested in posing, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Clicking on the image at the top will take you to the series of images shot with Amie.

N.B. If you have the stomach for it, should I try this on the other side of the camera?

Joshua in a Male Model Portrait Portfolio in Sheffield

Joshua_0004, originally uploaded by Jon W. Howson.

I have recently decided to step outside my comfort zone with my photography. I have shot lots of portraits for women, but rarely, if ever, done so for men. That is until Joshua was directed my way by a mutual friend who I had shot before. You have got to love the power of mouth to mouth publicity.

One of the problems that I came up against was with the posing. I have so many tips and ideas running through my head for how to pose a woman and to make her look feminine, but hardly any for a man. The only two tips that came to mind, were not to pose the head towards the higher should, and to have the whole body in two directions, that is the body facing one way, and the face and eyes in another. A woman though could have body facing one direction, her head a second, and her eyes a third.

So, the above image is just one of a series images taken for Joshua. They were taken in Whirlow Brook Park in Sheffield, and tried to show a variety of clothing styles.

Does anybody have any additional tips to improve my work with male posing and portfolio development?

Tina in a Location Portrait Session in Sheffield

Tina_0001

I just seem to be having a run of luck of having to constantly re-arrange shoot with models. Minor things keep on cropping up to thwart our plans to shoot together. However, I finally managed to get a shoot in, after almost a month of not shooting anybody, thanks to Tina, above.

Tina has been a long term friend and responded to a call for a shoot I was doing, called "Fashionably Elegant on a Budget: 10 Items Every Woman Should Own". It is based on a newspaper article in the Telgraph newspaper. It lists a "Magnificent 10" items that every woman should have: a little black dress, stiletto shoes, matching handbag, a trench coat, a white blouse, cashmere pullover, jeans, a white T-shirt, a pearl necklace and lipstick. So far, all of the models I have worked with have not had the full 10 items so we have often improvised with other items of clothing as a substitute.

If you click on the above picture it will take you to flickr and other images from the series.

Blog Update

Whoops! A very long time since the last update. I had planned to update more often, not less!

What have I done in the mean time? Kept myself busy with shoots and also attended another photography course at Norton College in Sheffield. This time it was a slightly higher level course focussing on Photography and Digital Imaging. The course culminated in an exhibition at Ponds Forge, along with other media based courses. I was slightly gutted to find out that the college also had make-up and fashion design courses also running, but communication between the courses was none existent. I would have loved to collaborated with these to help develop both our portfolios.

Speaking of which, I think I need to take my portfolio up a notch or two, whether this a better calibre of model (I have mainly used friends and new models up to now), and/or incorporating other into the shoot such as MUA, Stylist, etc..
